Famed artist and St. Louis native Solomon Thurman will discuss his artistic journey and the common thread of the African American experience that is woven throughout his art. Thurman’s best-known work is Black Americans in Flight, a 51-foot mural at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, which he co-created in 1990 with his mentor, the late Spencer Taylor. Since then, Thurman has developed his own unique style, creating works that range from the story of Celia, an enslaved Missouri teen, to a gospel choir in a church to a series of birdhouses from a friend’s property. After the presentation, join the artist for a book signing of his recently published memoir Junie, My Art Story.
