Turning Styrofoam into EcoGlOo

The Forest Park Forever team recently learned about a Girl Scout Troop that invented a new way to reuse styrofoam.  Known as the Blockheads, this group of Lindbergh High School students, girls aged 13-15, developed a unique, environmentally-friendly innovation to address the problem of styrofoamEcoGlOo.

As an organization focused on stewardship, conservation and preservation, Forest Park Forever considers sustainability an essential issue, and one we try hard to make gains on each year. When we learned about what the Blockheads were doing, we were thrilled to get involved however we could. Somewhat fortuitously, we had been saving a large amount of styrofoam that had been left over from from a recent project.   In 2015, we installed a 16-foot wide styrofoam mockup for an entry marker that is currently under construction todayThis marker will give an official welcome to people as they enter the Park at Skinker Blvd and Wells Drive – but the styrofoam was no longer of use and we wanted to avoid sending it to the landfill.

On Thursday, February 1, we joined the Blockheads for a kickoff event and donated our styrofoam to their cause.  Director of Planning and Projects Dave Lenczycki was on hand to join in their celebration. As an organization, we are inspired by the commitment and creativity of the Blockheads for their work on EcoGloo, and we are grateful to have played a part in their event!
